The most important facts about the e-invoice

Duty and requirements

E-invoices are the uniform standard for sending and receiving invoices that will apply from January 1, 2025. Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichen Papier- oder PDF-Rechnungen stellen E-Rechnungen die Rechnungsinhalte in einem strukturierten, maschinenlesbaren Datensatz dar. In accordance with EU standard EN 16931, this is based on a special XML format such as XRechnung or ZUGFeRD and enables automated processing by the invoice recipient.

Formats and standards

The most important formats for electronic invoices are ZUGFeRD and XRechnung. Diese Formate stellen sicher, dass Rechnungen sowohl automatisch verarbeitet als auch archiviert werden können. Unternehmen sollten sicherstellen, dass ihre Rechnungen den Anforderungen von 2025 entsprechen, um eine reibungslose Verarbeitung und Einhaltung der Vorschriften zu gewährleisten. Electronic invoices in XML format are particularly important here.

Affected Companies

Die neuen Regelungen der Verpflichtung zur Ausstellung einer E-Rechnung betrifft ausschließlich Geschäftsbeziehungen zwischen Unternehmen (B2B), unabhängig davon, ob das Unternehmen im Haupt- oder Nebenerwerb tätig ist. Ab 2028 müssen dann ausnahmslos alle Unternehmer E-Rechnungen im B2B-Bereich stellen. In addition, both the supplier and the recipient of the service must be domiciled in Germany.
